What Is Full Moon Party?

The Full Moon Party is an all-night beach party on the Kingdom of Thailand’s Haad Rin, a peninsular beach area and town on the southern tip of Ko Pha Ngan (Koh Pangan). This event is celebrated on the night before or on every full moon.
The first Full Moon Party was first held in 1985. With nothing but an improvised wooden disco, great music, and food, some people from the area threw a party for about 20 to 30 people. That first event was such a hit that it quickly gained popularity by word of mouth. Today, the event normally attracts a mammoth crowd of 20,000 to 30,000 people every full moon. Tellingly, it has become a part of the itinerary of many tourists in Asia.
During the near-to-monthly gatherings, the party starts as soon as the sun sets and extends until the sun rises the next day as the bars in the sunrise beach stay open and play music. Genres played during the Full Moon Party are a mix of dance-able tunes such as R&B, drum and bass, house, dance, and reggae. The festivities are characterized by unruly and potentially dangerous attractions like fire-skipping ropes, wildly variable alcohol strength “buckets,” and a drug culture, which all contributes to the celebration’s reputation as the “ultimate party experience.” To control the raucous atmosphere during the Full Moon Party, police enforcement is usually intensified especially because drug laws in Thailand are still strict. An increasing number of assaults and robberies during the event, however, had been recorded in recent years.
The Full Moon Party is so popular that it has now reached mainstream pop culture, as it was featured in films like “The Beach,” “Last Stop for Paul,” and the Thai film, “Hormones,” as well as Comedy Central’s TV show, Gerhard Reinke’s first episode, “Wanderlust.” In 2011, the party was also featured on a documentary about the negative impacts of tourism on local people and the economy titled, “Tourism and the Truth: Stacey Dooley Investigates.”
