What Is Santa Domenica Vittoria Town Festival?

The Santa Domenica Festival is a small-town feast with an outsized charm. The event is held in Santa Domenica Vittoria, a small commune in the province of Messina in Sicily, which is known for its gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea and its cuisine. The administrative area of Santa Domenica covers 19 square kilometers, but the town itself is just more or less two square kilometers.
Santa Domenica is named after a Calabrian Saint, a victim of the Roman persecution of Christians under Diocletian. The town festival is called the Feast of St. Anthony, from the town’s patron saint. This annual celebration is the biggest event of the year in the town. The feast proper falls on January 17 every year. However, given the cold winters that are usually accompanied by heavy snow and below freezing conditions during this time of year in the area, the town celebrates the feast instead on the first Sunday of September.
The townspeople’s way of celebrating the Santa Domenica Festival is a mix of religious and secular activities. During the days leading up to the main celebration, prayers in the local church are offered for seven days. On the day of the feast itself, a procession through every street of the town is held. The townspeople traditionally pin money to the statue as it passes by their balconies. The day concludes with a fireworks display, fulfilling its mission for aesthetic and entertainment purposes through a class of explosive pyrotechnic, and a party in the town’s main piazza or city square.
