The first Hurricane Festival was held in 1973 in the very same venue where it is held today. It was called "Es rockt in der Heide" back then, meaning "It's rocking the heath."
Even back then, the event registered about 52,000 people. Today, the event can attract as many as 80,000 people. The large crowd is partly due to promotions made through VIVA, a German private music television channel owned by Viacom, the MTV Network’s parent company.
