What Is Semana Santa?

Semana Santa, or the Holy Week, is the last week of Lent before Easter in the Christian calendar. Christians observe this season as a way to commemorate Jesus Christ’s last week on earth as told in the Gospels of the Bible.
During this time, two sacrifices are called for among healthy adult Christians—abstinence and fasting. Abstinence means that Christians must need eat meat or enjoy anything too rich or luxurious, while fasting means that Christians must decrease their food intake or shun food altogether. Another tradition of Early Church during Semana Santa is the Pilgrimage of Etheria, which instructs Christians on complete and proper way of observing the Holy Week in the church.
This annual event includes the Catholic holy days of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday, which corresponds to Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry to Jerusalem, the day of the Last Supper with his disciples and Jesus’ agony in the garden before he was arrested by his prosecutors, and the day of his trial, sufferings and death on the cross.
On Palm Sundays, believers commemorate Jesus’ by reenacting how the people of Jerusalem welcomed him by waving palm leaves. Thus, the faithful usually bring palm leaves to be blessed before the Sunday Mass is celebrated. After this are Holy Monday, Holy Tuesday, and Holy Wednesday, during which the Gospel readings tell the events leading to Jesus final agonizing hours. On Maundy Thursday, private celebration of Mass is prohibited. The Chrism Mass and the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is held instead, inaugurating the period of the three days (Easter Triduum).
On Good Friday of Semana Santa, all Christians are encouraged to fast, as they sacrifice bodily comfort and reflect on their lives, repent on their sins, and rebuild their relationship with God. After this comes Black Saturday, when tabernacles in Christian churches are left bare and dark, symbolizing the darkness of man’s life without Jesus Christ. Semana Santa ends with the Easter Vigil, held late on Black Saturday night and on to the wee hours of Easter Sunday, when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
