What Is Bastille Day?

The Bastille Day, held every July 14, is an important celebration for the French. Known formally in France as La Fete Nationale (“The National Celebration”) and informally as le quatorze julienne (“the fourteenth of July”), this public holiday commemorates the day that Paris commoners and peasants stormed the fortress and prison of Bastille. The fall of Bastille is widely believed to have been the start of the end for the French monarchy and France's aristocratic order, and thus seen as the beginning of the French republic.
Every year, millions of French people celebrate this day in and out of the country, with thousands more people of other nationalities visiting Paris to partake of the celebrations.
The first Bastille Day celebration was held during the first anniversary of the storming of the famous prison in 1790 and was known as Fete de la Federation. This precursor of the modern Bastille Day was held in Champ de Mars, and witnessed the captain of the Paris guards and King Louis XVI taking their oaths to the constitution of the newly-formed French republic.
Since then, it has been a tradition to hold start the Bastille Day celebrations with a grand military parade on the Champs-Elysees in front of France's president. Public celebrations, lively street parties, gatherings in cafes and restaurants, a garden party held at the Palais de l'Elysee hosted by the president, formal balls with free flowing wines, singing of the French national anthem (“La Marseillaise”) and the display of the French flag are just some of the common activities during Bastille Day. On this day, the president can also choose to pardon criminals.
