What Is Australia Day?

Every 26th of January, Australians displays their biggest smiles as they celebrate Australia Day. This is the official national public holiday, observed in every state and territory.
Australia Day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet, the eleven ships from the Great Britain that established the first European colony in the continent at Sydney Cove in 1788. This is also the anniversary of the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of new Holland.
Originally, the celebrations on this day are not known as Australia Day. Instead, it was known by other names such as "Anniversary Day", "Foundation Day", and "ANA Day." Celebration on this day was first recorded in 1818, with the first official fete of the formation of New South Wales.
The year 1988 marked the beginning of an increased national participation in the Australian Day. However, it was only as recent as 1994 when all Australian states and territories celebrated it on the same day. Based on a research in 2007, 27.6% Australians attended an organized Australia Day event and a further 25.6% celebrated with family and friends making it the largest annual public event in the continent.
One of the most prominent features of this event is the conferment of the Honors List for the Order of Australia. This is an order of chivalry established by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia in 1975 to recognize the citizens of Australia for notable achievements and services to the country. The presentation of the Australian of the Year awards is also held in a program that also features an address from the governor-general and Prime Minister. All throughout the Australia, there are also community festivals, concerts and citizenship ceremonies.
