What Is Valentines Day?

Valentine's Day is celebrated every February 14 as heart's or love day all over the world. During this day, people give chocolates, candies, flowers, love notes and other gifts to their loved ones. Millions of couples usually go on special dates in romantic restaurants or getaway vacations to celebrate their togetherness.
The reason for the day of St. Valentine taking on such romantic meaning is not clear cut but one legend stands out. The story goes that this used to be a Roman fertility festival of Lupercalis or Lupercalia, which was originally observed every February 15. The day was set a day earlier and was renamed as the feast of St. Valentine when Rome was Christianized. Interestingly enough, the Catholic Church recognizes three St. Valentines and all them were believed to have been martyred on a February 14, but among these three the day was meant to honor the St. Valentine who was a priest in Rome.
The most popular version of the legend explains that the priest became a saint because he performed secret marriages between soldiers and their sweethearts in defiance of the Roman emperor's ban, which stemmed from his belief that soldiers became more attached to family and thus weaker in battle when they are married. In helping lovers become united in matrimony, Valentine became known as the “friend of lovers,” which resulted to his incarceration. In jail, it was said that the young priest became friends with the jailer's daughter, who became distraught when she learned that the priest will be executed. Valentine then wrote a letter to her and signed it “From your Valentine,” a phrase that lives on to this day.
