What Is Anzac Day?

Australia and New Zealand celebrate the Anzac Day every April 25. This is a national holiday honoring the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) members who sacrificed themselves during the Gallipoli Campaign in Turkey during World War I. This event is one of the most important events in the history of both these Pacific countries. It is recognized as one of the rare instances of two sovereign countries sharing the same name for national remembrance days.
The dawn service is the common way to celebrate Anzac Day. This is a symbolism of how the soldiers sought the comradeship they had in the “quiet, peaceful moments before dawn.” The first official service to commemorate Anzac Day was held in Sydney Cenotaph in 1927. During the ceremony, just before dawn, the veterans are ordered to “stand-to,” followed by two minutes of silence. One bugler plays “The Lost Post” at the start of the ceremony, then concludes through the “Reveille.”
Recently, the governments of Australia and New Zealand are encouraging families and young people to take part in the dawn services. As a result, they have become more complex, with the service incorporating hymns, readings, pipers, and rifle volleys. The New Zealand and Australian national anthems are also played.
