What Is Canada Day?

Canada Day is the national day of Canada. Formerly called as Dominion Day, it is a federal statutory holiday that celebrates the anniversary of the British North America Act (BNA Act), now called as the Constitution Act, 1867, on July 1. This comprises a major part of the Constitution of Canada and unites three British colonies—Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada—into Canada. This is a nationwide celebration, and also inspires festivities in other parts of the world, especially those with big Canadian populations.
According to the Federal Holidays Act, Canada Day is always celebrated every July 1—except if it falls on a Sunday, which then makes July 2 the statutory holiday—although most celebratory events still take place in July 1.
The celebration of Canada Day started when Governor-General Charles Stanley Monck, 4th Viscount Monck, issued a royal proclamation for Canadians to honor the anniversary of the confederation. The day was legally designated as Dominion Day in 1879, in reference to the designation of the country as a Dominion in the British North America Act. The day itself was not such a prominent occasion until the early 20th century, because many of the people living in Canadian territory then still saw themselves as British rather than Canadians. No official celebrations for this day were held until 1917, the golden anniversary of the Confederation.
During Canada Day, outdoor public events, such as parades, carnivals, festivals, barbecues, air and maritime shows, fireworks, and free musical concerts are organized. Citizenship ceremonies for new citizens are also usually held during the event that is known as "Canada’s birthday."
