What Is St. Patricks Day?

Saint Patrick's Day is a public holiday celebrated every March 17 in the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Montserrat, and Newfoundland and Labrador. People of Irish heritage also celebrate the event wherever they may be in the world, but mostly in places with a higher concentration of Irish immigrants such as in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina.
March 17 used to be celebrated as a religious holiday to commemorate how Christianity reached the shores of Ireland. It was also regarded as the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, made official during the early 17th century. The man Patrick was apparently only a lad when Irish raiders kidnapped him from his Romano-English family and took him to Ireland as a slave. He was able to flee from that ordeal and managed to return to England where he eventually became a priest. Some years after, he went back to Ireland as a bishop where he became the primary personage to convert the Irish to Christianity.
In the course of centuries, the feast became a public holiday. However, its celebrations are still highly religious, with many Irish attending religious services. On this day, too, many Irish wear shamrocks and green clothes, practices which originated from St. Patrick when he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish and from converted Irish soldiers who later chose to wear full-green uniforms on March 17 as a political statement. Another way of celebrating this feast is by a religious procession in honor of the saint. During years when March 17 falls within the Lenten season, restrictions on food and alcoholic beverages are temporarily lifted to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The feast is now a national festival that is known the world over and has become an identifier for the Irish.
