What Is International Regatta Of Bathtubs?

The International Regatta of Bathtubs, or La Regate des Baignoires, is a fun event held every August in Dinant, Belgium. A quirky, semi-sporty affair, it is an annual festival that locals and tourists alike have grown fond of.
Originally conceived by the town as a promotional gimmick to lure tourists away from nearby Brussels and into Dinant, the International Bathtub Regatta has since taken a life of its own. It has grown to become quite popular in itself. In August 2012, Dinant will host the 28th International Regatta of Bathtubs, which is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors
The International Bathtub Regatta, strictly speaking, is a festival wherein contestants must ride a floating bathtub and steer it upstream over the Meuse River. The contestant who gets to the finish line first is declared winner.
What makes the event unique, other than the floating bathtubs, is that the contestants are encouraged not just to race against each other but also to express their opinions and creativity through the design of their floating bathtubs. The contestants are usually required to follow a special theme for each run of the contest, and they mostly respond by injecting mockery, humor, and quirkiness to their entries.
The regatta, despite being a race, however, does seem to value creativity over speed. For example, many locals join the contestants on the river and impede (whether by design or accident) their progress by circling the floating bathtubs. The media, too, is allowed to get in the water, which results in further slowing down the progress of the contestants. All this is mostly taken in good humor, though, as both contestants and spectators alike are given beautiful glimpses of some of Dinant’s treasures, such as its church and citadel. Before, during, and after the race, the town also consumes conspicuous amounts of food and beer to celebrate the event.
