What Is Notting Hill Carnival?

The Notting Hill Festival is an annual celebration that has been happening in the United Kingdom since the 1964. The event centers around the Notting Hill Carnival, held in the Notting Hill area of London. It happens two days every August, usually coinciding with the August bank holiday Monday and the day beforehand. The Notting Hill Festival is led by members of the West Indian community, particularly the “Trinis,” the slang name for citizens or residents of the UK whose ethnicity originates fully or partially from the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, many of whom lived in the area since the 1950s.
The roots of the carnival came from two separate but connected strands. The first one is brought about by the Notting Hill race riots, a series of racially-motivated mass actions that took place around the area over several nights in late August and early September of the 1958. In January 1959, in St. Pancras Town Hall, as a response to the depressing state of racism, the carnival was commenced. Claudia Cumberbath Jomes, widely recognized as the “Mother of the Notting Hill Carnival and also a “Trini” and a journalist, organized the first event which was a success, despite being held indoors. Another strand was the “hippie” London Free School inspired free festival, which is an event featuring a combination of music, arts and cultural activities. No admission charge is required to join this festival; instead, participation is expected. It was founded on 8 March 1966, eventually evolving into what is now known as the Notting Hill Carnival. Over time, the two strands merged and resulted into today's more diverse Notting Hill event that promotes cultural unity.
Notting Hill Carnival attracts up to two million people in the past, making it the second largest street festival in the world after the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, held in Brazil before Lent every year, with two million people per day on the streets. A festival or gala, Notting Hill is also an event usually and ordinarily staged by a local community which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community and the Festival.
