BY EMILY ALLEN Six Americans boarded a plane for home on Thursday after Egypt lifted its travel ban on the Non Government Organization workers. The NGOs are still on trial -- a sore spot between the US and Egypt. Their departure to the US might not be a happily-ever-after ending for the two countries. Here's Fox News. "They weren't just allowed to go free, there were terms put in for their freedom. And as we understand there was a bail price of $300000 each that our country had to pay Egypt." The Washington Post said in December Egyptian authorities raided several foreign-funded NGO offices. Egypt barred the workers from leaving the country and... "...accused the groups of operating illegally, sowing unrest and working to carry out a US plot to destroy Egypt." The law requires NGOs to have a license from the Egyptian government to operate in the country - but it's hard to get one. An Egyptian professor on Al Jazeera defended the law, saying there are foreign-funded groups out there trying to manipulate Egypt's democracy to satisfy their own agendas. However, an Egyptian human rights researcher countered him saying the government is cracking down for a different reason. "The military of course has always been looking for foreign hands that must lay behind this violence to deflect an evaluation of their own performance and their own role in the violence and using excessive force against protesters." White House press secretary Jay Carney told Fox News in a press conference " ... in our discussions with the staff, the supreme council of the armed forces we've made clear our concerns about this issue, and our disappointment that these several citizens are not being allowed to depart Egypt. (...) We continue to work with the Egyptian authorities to resolve this issue" The Washington Post reports that Egyptian authorities last month raided the offices of several US-funded organizations, who promote transparency in governance, including the International Republican Institute. These organizations have for years operated openly, but unofficially, because the government has not allowed them to register as NGOs. "A former IRI official who has followed the case closely said Sunday that his former colleagues had indicated they would take shelter at the embassy only as a last resort, if they had reason to believe their arrest might be imminent." According to the White House, a handful of Americans have taken refuge at the US Embassy in Cairo.
