Take a tour of Agra's Red Fort in Agra, India -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Agra, India is a wonderful city, known for the Taj Mahal and its sister monument, the Red Fort. This structure was rebuilt in 1573 from an old brick fort, which had been left to ruin. The red color of the fort comes from the sandstone faces over the brick core. The entire fort is surrounded by high walls and decorated with intricate carvings and designs. The Red Fort is as much a piece of art as it is a self-protected fortification. Legend holds that the patron of this fort, responsible for its present appearance, was imprisoned here in a tower which looks out onto the Taj Mahal, which he built for his beloved wife.

The Taj Mahal (also "the Taj") is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Ottoman, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage." While the white domed marble mausoleum is its most familiar component, the Taj Mahal is actually an integrated complex of structures. Building began around 1632 and was completed around 1653, and employed thousands of artisans and craftsmen. The Persian architect, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri is generally considered to be the principal designer of the Taj Mahal

After spending the morning at Fatehpur Sikri, we finish our time in Agra at the last UNESCO World Heritage Site, Agra Fort. It was constructed in 1573 by Mughal emperor Akbar, and added on by his grandson Shah Jahan. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, but was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb for the last eight years of his life, and could only watch the Taj Mahal from his prison cell window. The fort is now a major tourist attraction and exquisite example of Mughal architecture, with famous buildings such as Khas Mahal and Jahangiri Mahal. Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Agra, India. The fort is also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. It is about 2.5 km northwest of its much more famous sister monument, the Taj Mahal. The fort can be more accurately described as a walled palatial city. It is the most important fort in India. The great Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. The legend is that Shah Jahan built the beautiful Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Unlike his grandfather, Shah Jahan tended to have buildings made from white marble, often inlaid with gold or semi-precious gems. He destroyed some of the earlier buildings inside the fort in order to make his own. At the end of his life, Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son, Aurangzeb, in the fort, a punishment which might not seem so harsh, considering the luxury of the fort. It is rumored that Shah Jahan died in Muasamman Burj, a tower with a marble balcony with an excellent view of the Taj Mahal.

A day trip to the Taj Mahal sometime in the 50's. Having just been there I can tell you it was TONS less crowded then. So much security today. I am in love with the reflection in the pool shot. Built by Shah Jahan - Designed by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri Today "The Taj" is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the words of Shah Jahan: Should guilty seek asylum here, Like one pardoned, he becomes free from sin. Should a sinner make his way to this mansion, All his past sins are to be washed away. The sight of this mansion creates sorrowing sighs; And the sun and the moon shed tears from their eyes. In this world this edifice has been made; To display thereby the creator's glory.
