Normally we go to Granada because it's a favorite city of ours, but this time we decided to go back to San Juan del Sur since we hadn't been there in awhile. San Juan del Sur is located approximately a 45 minute taxi ride from the Penas Blancas border crossing with Costa Rica so it's easy to get to. If you're into surfing, fishing and beautiful beaches than San Juan del Sur may just deserve a look see, but don't be confused, the beach at San Juan del Sur isn't all that, but it's a GREAT home base for the better beaches to the north and south of San Juan. San Juan del Sur is a coastal town on the Pacific Ocean, in south-west Nicaragua. The town is a popular tourist location because of its many nearby and spectacular beaches. San Juan del Sur is also popular among surfers and is a vacation spot for many Nicaraguan families and foreign tourists. It really is a good, unspoiled alternative to Costa Rica. The surf is, however, not in San Juan del Sur itself the waves are simply not big enough in town. We went to Madera beach about 10 km north of San Juan del Sur to surf. Madera beach is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful beach and when you dont surf you can suntan and go for long walks. Amazing. This video gives you an idea about why Madera beach have become so popular it simply is a stunning place!!

San Juan del Sur San Juan del Sur upholds the flavour and character that only the sea is able to offer; time flows discreetly and before we know it our day has passed as the sun sets in the distance, we realize that this is a spectacle that should not be missed. Seen from the beach of Marseilles or from any of the restaurants along the coast, it is definite that the sun has an intimate connection with San Juan del Sur. Its rays penetrate the ocean, performing a serene and melodious duet, then water and fire melt together detonating our senses and intrinsic desires, leading up to a unique climax of being under a universe of stars where anything can happen. In 1523, San Jorge, Rivas was the setting for the first encounter between Nicaraguans and Spaniards, as Gil Gonzalez de Ávila met with Chief Nicaragua who the country was named after. Rivas was used both as a migratory bridge for the Indigenous tribes and as a transportation corridor during Colonial times. Indigenous cemeteries have been found in the area of San Juan del Sur and Ostional, unfortunately no authority gave any importance to the matter and the tombs have subsequently been plundered indiscriminately and the articles are now part of private collections. These historical treasures have not only been robbed from their rightful resting place, but we have lost the right to the knowledge of our cultural legacy - our link to the past.
